- It will cost just as much to produce our minimum quantity than to produce anything less because the press preparation time is much greater than the actual production running time. So it is not possible to save any money by trying to print lower than the minimum.

What is pantone spot color C and U or M?

Colors created without screens or dots, such as those found in the Pantone matching, are referred to in the industry as spot or solid colors. From a palette of 14 basic colors, each of the spot colors in the pantone matching is mixed according to its own unique ink mixing formula developed by Pantone. You probably mixed yellow and blue paint to get green in your youth. Creating a pantone spot color is similar in concept, but with the added need for precision.

Each color in the System has a unique name or number followed by either a C - coated / shiny colors printed on a glossy stock , U / M uncoated / matte printed on uncoated paper stock. Also created without screens, pastel colors and pantone metallic are considered part of the pantone matching system.

Be very careful with some pantone yellow coated and uncoated colors, that are yellow when printed on a coated paper stock and orange when printed on a uncoated paper stock.

What are Process Colors?

This method of achieving color in printing is referred to as CMYK, four-color process, 4/c process or even just process. To reproduce a color image, a file is separated into four different colors: Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y) and Black (K).

During separation, screen tints comprised of small dots are applied at different angles to each of the four colors. The screened separations are then transferred to four different printing plates, one for each color, and run on a printing press with one color overprinting the next. The composite image fools the naked eye with the illusion of continuous tone.

Process colors are represented as percentages of cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Varying the percentages offers thousands of color possibilities. When four-color process printing is used to reproduce photographs, decorative elements such as borders and graphics can be created out of process colors. This helps to avoid the added expense of an extra plate needed to print each spot color.

Converting spot colors to process colors

Often times, a spot pantone color is requested when creating a four color process item. To save money, the spot color should be evaluated to see how it will look if printed in CMYK. While some colors can be simulated well, there are many that look quite different. As the quality of the resulting color conversion is very subjective, the designer can make decisions using the pantone color bridge guide.

What are the art requirements?

Vector Adobe Illustrator CS5 or below, PDF, or EPS files. Please, do not send CMYK or 4-color process for express line products

Fonts should be saved to outlines or curves. We may not have the font you used in our font collection.

All images used in a file must be embedded. If you use a placed image, you must supply the separate files as well as the layout. When sending a Quark X-press/InDesign document, it is important to provide us with all linked files.

Raster graphics, for instance TIFF’s and JPEG’s, must have a resolution of 300dpi or higher. Anything lower translates poorly at press.

All fonts must be 8pts or higher, anything smaller may fill in while printing. Script fonts and reverse type must be 10pts or greater. When using a small font type, a slight stroke weight will be added to the font to avoid printing issues. All fonts are assessed on an individual basis for each job. If a font is not converted to outlines/curves we will substitute a similar font from our collection. If there is no hard copy to compare the front with, we will request new artwork.

Screens/halftones and gradients will print coarse. A screen is not a solid color, it is a shade (percentage) of a color. It is represented by a pattern of dots. Solid spot colors will print with a clean edge, screens will print with a jagged coarse edge, due to the dots. Any value under 25% may drop off, and any value over 60% may fill in on our Letterpress and Pad printed items. With High-speed offset printing, best results printing in halftones occur in the 5-70% range. 70% appears like a 90% screen. Screens will be adjusted to meet our press requirements if they don’t meet our minimums and maximums, however, faster files/placed images cannot be adjusted. We are unable to print our metallic inks as halftones/screens or gradients.
